Related smoke-control standard
BS EN 12101-13:2022 provides design and calculation methods, installation requirements, acceptance testing, routine testing and maintenance guidance for pressure differential systems (PDS).
These systems use controlled pressure differences to help limit the movement of smoke and maintain more tenable conditions in protected spaces such as escape stairs, lobbies and firefighting routes.
How this relates to EN 1366
BS EN 12101-13 is part of the EN 12101 smoke and heat control series. It is not an EN 1366 fire-resistance test standard. The two families can, however, apply to the same project.
- EN 12101-13 addresses the design and performance of the overall pressure differential system.
- EN 1366 contains fire-resistance test methods for relevant service installations and smoke-control components.
- The project may also require appropriate evidence for ductwork, dampers, fans, shafts, penetrations, supports and control arrangements.
What project teams should establish
- The intended smoke-control strategy and protected spaces.
- The required pressure differences, airflow paths and door-opening conditions.
- The duty and classification required from each component.
- Whether proposed ductwork and dampers are covered by suitable test and classification evidence.
- How installation, commissioning, acceptance testing and ongoing maintenance will be managed.
Important distinction
Compliance with BS EN 12101-13 does not by itself demonstrate that every ductwork component is fire resistant or suitable for the proposed duty. Component evidence and project-specific details must also be checked against the applicable standards, classifications and manufacturer documentation.
